For the last eight years Solly Irving, a Jewish holocaust survivor from london has responded to requests and made an annual visit to Plymouth to share his personal testimony. Each year, during a four day stay, he speaks to large groups in twelve secondry schools. To date, over 16,000 young people have been moved to silience by his story of war, abondonment, inprisonment and survival. It is a harrowing account.
How can a child of 12, seperated from his parents, sisters and community, survive? But somehow he did. As solly says, "I was destined to survive" Solly was finally liberated by the Russians in May 1945 at Theresienstadt Camp, Czechoslovakia.
He was just 14 years old, the only survior from his lage family. He was one of the first group of children to be offered a home here in England. Collectively the group became known as "The Boys" and a book of the same title, about the group, was written by Sir Martin Gilbert.
