Story Telling Cafe - Plymouth Arts Centre

02 March 2011 12:54

Tailor-made storytelling : the world café with treats for your ears as well as your tastebuds!

The Storytelling Café took place on February the 19th at Plymouth Arts centre. The day was a wonderful celebration of storytelling, cultures and food, with a range of ages as well as people living in Plymouth who had come from many different places in the world. The storytelling tent created a marvellous backdrop for the storytelling, and filled with comfortable bean bags it was the perfect space for our story-hungry crowd to relax and open their ears!

Our professional storyteller Leo Sofer wove a story specifically for the group from ideas and images that were thrown up by the group at the start of his session. Touching on themes of home, being outcast, unity and the common things that bring us all together, he created a magical atmosphere that touched everyone involved. Nik Brooks from Stone Soup was a flamboyant and energetic host in his top hat and tails, and told us the wonderful story of the tailor who spent his last pennies on a particularly beautiful piece of material, as well as introducing the other participants.

Our amateur story tellers gave us a range of amazing tales, from a mimed story about a foolish king, to the Celtic myth of Cerridwen.

The food was an array of offerings from around the world, with lots of tasty sweet treats, to tickle the tastebuds.

Altogether the day was a great success with over 50 participants, and some lovely sunshine outside to boot!
