Holocaust Memorial Day 2011 - Plymouth University

27 January 2011 13:00

This year the Centre has organised a series of events leading up to HMD.

This year Jonathan worked with four students from All Saints Academy at Plymouth High School to designan installation at the university of Plymouth's Portland Building.

This consistedof a section of prision-camp fencing, from which butterflies and other symbols of freedom, were attached.

The butterfly is a recurring symbol in children's poetry, written under the most apalling conditions, in camps and ghettos during the holocaust.

University students paused in front of this arresting, challenging and moving structure.

Jess Bent, Ailish Sinclair, Sam Hancock and Andrew Hepburn - together with their leader, Laura Thorpe, have been part of the national 'Lessons from Auschwitz" project  - organised by the Holocaust Educational Trust.

"By understanding the very most that human beings can be we are impelled to become the very best that human beings can be"
